Mario Kart, the game we all know and love. It doesn’t matter if you’re a hardcore gamer, a casual gamer or not even a gamer at all! Everyone loves a good game of Mario Kart with some friends. Since the Wii, you were able to play it online but nothing beats a game with 4 friends on the couch.
And then in 2014, Nintendo came with a version for the Wii U, named Mario Kart 8. It was a follow-up to the 3DS’s Mario Kart 7. The Wii U didn’t sell well, but Mario Kart 8 was an amazing game, personally, I’d say it was the best one yet. It even came with 2 DLC packs with characters that were never in a Mario game at all. These we’re Link from The Legend of Zelda and Villager from Animal Crossing.
Then in 2017, the Nintendo Switch was released and Nintendo came with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. It was an expansion on the version of the Wii U. With more characters and all the DLC already unlocked. It has 48 tracks and 42 different characters and some have all kinds of variations. They also added a lot new battle mode tracks.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe also runs at 1080p on the TV and 720p in handheld mode. Which looks fantastic. They improved greatly on battle mode, in which they added: Renegade Roundup, Bob-omb Blast, Coin Runners, Shine Thief and 8 new battle courses. The battle modes are exactly what you’d expect them to be. This is one of the biggest additions within Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
200cc is also back and it’s as hyped as ever. You can even race it online now! Same goes for 150ccMirror. You can now race as 6 new characters, they brought back some old ones like King Boo, Bowser Jr. and Dry Bones. But also added new ones like the Inkling Girl, Inkling Boy and Gold Mario.
The Online mode is still kind of “meh.” The servers are terrible! A lot of the times it takes multiple tries to connect to a lobby and when racing a lot if things happen. Racers will teleport, you will hit items you weren’t even close to or get hit by nothing. And a lot, a lot of communication errors. That’s the online mode of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in a nutshell. I hope that they will fix this.
Overall I’d give Mario Kart 8 Deluxe an 8.5/10. They will probably fix the servers at one point and then I’ll definitely give it 9.5/10. The reason being 2 negatives.
- Some odd character decisions, some of those came over from Mario Kart 8 for Wii U
- The servers are really bad!
Furthermore, it’s an awesome game and I really recommend it to anyone! I really love almost every aspect of it. If I were you I would buy Mario Kart 8 Deluxe now!
